What happens if you as the leader give out an impossible order? Will your team still try to carry out the order? What happens in organisations where the fear of making a mistake drives people to reject any form of ownership, keep quiet when they see problems and just follow the cain of commands?
I never knew exactly how hard it was to transform a control and command type of organisation with a strikt hierarchy until I found myself in one. I just wish I had found this book two years ago, as I embarked on a journey from the flat informal hierarchy in Sweden to the top down strikt and formal old industry culture of the most conservative parts of Bayern in Germany. But no matter how strict the chain of command works in your organisation, all, and I mean ALL, leaders needs to ask themselves the questions to consider that David Marquet ends each chapter with. These questions are brilliant, straight forward and offers such great value of reflexion.
David Marquet has a stunning ability to make difficult situations and relationships easy to grasp and he challenge not only his organisation, the leaders and the entire crew onboard the US submarine Santa Fe, but also himself and the whole leadership culture of the US Navy. I wish all these great lessons from this book to every leader out there. And if you are not a leader, but member of a team and feel the pain of the leder-follower structure, read this book and then give it to your manager. Together we can make the world better by truly empower team through enable a culture of leader-leaders. This is a powerful handbook.
